LENZ is pleased to see the recent announcement from the Hon Andrew Hoggard, Associate Minister of Agriculture, about consultation on revised regulation for live export trade.
The Minister has reaffirmed the government commitment to reinstating the live export trade and consulting on Act and regulation changes in 2025.
LENZ Executive Director Glen Neal says the industry continues to be committed to ensuring animal welfare is at the forefront of new regulations.
“Animal welfare is at the heart of the proposed new rules and we fully support achieving the goal to reinstate trade with the highest possible standards of animal welfare.”
“LENZ supports moving to new rules that will see best practice become standard practice.
Glen Neal says New Zealand has a proud reputation for its exports and this will be enhanced by a clear set of expectations that puts animal welfare front and centre.
“Our trading partners want our cattle for dairy and breeding purposes. This isn’t about export for slaughter – that hasn’t happened out of NZ for a very long time. Instead, there is clear demand from countries whose consumers want fresh milk sourced locally.”
Reinstating trade could see New Zealand’s rural economies benefit to the tune of $400m per annum, he says
“That’s a very welcome shot in the arm for farmers, transporters, stock agents, veterinarians, stock-handlers – all people who live in and spend money in our communities.”
